Dr Ranil De Silva

Qualifying from King’s College school of medicine and dentistry in 1995, Dr de Silva completed training in general medicine, general cardiology and interventional cardiology at Royal Brompton, Chelsea and Westminster, Northwick Park, Hammersmith, and St. Mary’s hospitals. Dr de Silva undertook his PhD research while a medical student under the supervision of Professor Attilio Maseri and Professor Giovanni Mann at the MRC Cyclotron Unit at Hammersmith Hospital and the Research Institute for Brain and Blood Vessels in Akita, Japan. His research focused on assessment of the pathophysiology of myocardial ischaemia and reperfusion using cardiac positron emission tomography.  He then undertook post-doctoral research at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA. His work focused on X-ray fused with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and real-time MRI-guided endovascular intervention, with particular emphasis on targeted delivery of cardiac cell therapies
